All the Easter Eggs We Found in Taylor Swift’s Patient Zero Music Video

Taylor Swift has turned hidden clues into an art form, and her “Patient Zero” music video continues that tradition with a dark mix of romance, murder, gothic imagery, and psychological suspense. Debuted during the MTV Video Music Awards, the video stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, with appearances from Cara Delevingne and Matthew Stafford. Almost immediately, fans began searching every scene for references and clues.

One of the biggest Easter eggs appeared before the video was even released. During an Emmy-night Law & Order sketch, Swift delivered the unusual phrase, “Saccharide Aries from the vineyard north or south.” Fans soon connected each part to one of the video’s stars. “Saccharide” was linked to Farrell through his role in Sugar, while Aries, represented by a ram, pointed toward Los Angeles Rams player Matthew Stafford. “From the vineyard” appeared to reference Delevingne, whose surname has Old French connections to the vine. “North or south” was interpreted as a nod to Johnson through North Dakota and South Dakota.

The crime-themed Law & Order sketch may have also been an early hint at the video’s murder-centered storyline. Swift’s ability to place information in seemingly unrelated moments made the clue especially satisfying once the full story was revealed.

The video’s tombstone provided another major connection to Swift’s past. Nearly a decade after featuring her own grave in “Look What You Made Me Do,” Swift returned to the imagery in “Patient Zero.” This time, fans noticed a wedding photograph positioned near the grave, leading to plenty of speculation and jokes about it being the closest glimpse of Swift as a bride.

The tombstone itself reads 1986 to 2022. Swifties quickly began searching for meaning in the numbers, with one theory connecting the six to Swift’s 1989 birth year when turned upside down. The ending date also places the character’s death at age 36, matching Swift’s age at the time of the video.

Cars provide another possible connection to Swift’s earlier work. In “Delicate,” Swift dances on a car during a video associated with the beginning of a romance. In “Patient Zero,” she appears as a ghost lying across a similar vehicle, turning the same type of imagery into a symbol of a relationship’s tragic ending.

Fans also noticed similarities between the dining-table scene in “Patient Zero” and the atmosphere of “Tolerate It,” one of Swift’s Evermore songs. Both visuals evoke emotional distance and an increasingly fractured relationship, creating another possible link within Swift’s visual universe.

Perhaps the most remarkable clue came from Swift herself. During a December 2025 conversation with Stephen Colbert, she described the kinds of stories she enjoys, mentioning an old mansion covered in moss or ivy, a mysterious relationship, a potentially deceptive husband, a past murder, ghosts, and an unreliable narrator. The description sounded remarkably close to the world eventually created in “Patient Zero.”

Swift later explained that the gray house in the video represented the coldness of a relationship that had faded and deteriorated. She also revealed that the video allowed her to explore genres she loves, including gothic ghost stories, true crime, and psychological thrillers.

With its layered references and carefully planted clues, “Patient Zero” proves once again that Swift’s music videos are designed to be watched more than once. For her fans, every prop, date, setting, and visual parallel can become another piece of the puzzle.
